What to Feed a Writer

I recently asked a new writer, “What do you read?”

“Read?” she said. “There’s no time! I barely have time to write.”

Virelle, I couldn’t agree more. I’m finishing my bachelor’s degree, so the bulk of my reading at the current moment in life is of the textbook variety, but I still love it. I picked up Jane Eyre a few months ago and devoured it quickly. I felt the difference in my writing immediately.

Years ago a writer friend of mine told me that she didn’t really like to read. I still scratch my head at that one. If we’re going to improve in our craft, we’ve got to read!
